Improving our building fabric, one step at a time, next retrofitting the external cavity walls…

Like many homes built in the 1930s, ours was cold and leaky. In winter, the heat escaped through our walls, windows, floors and roof, making it expensive to stay warm. And in summer? We’d overheat, struggling to keep cool. Our rising energy bills meant less money for other things. So, we had to find a way to make our home more comfortable and more affordable to run. Our house was losing heat because it wasn’t insulated properly. To fix this, we took on a full domestic retrofit, following the Fabric First Approach.

This meant improving our home’s thermal performance-step by step, starting with our external walls. But first, we had to uncover what was really behind the old render.

Through these images, we’ll show you our journey: how we identified the issues, the materials we used, and the techniques that helped us create a home that stays warmer in winter and cooler in summer- all while reducing our energy costs.

Our process was to first:

  • Identified the project issues and agree the best solutions

  • Confirm, cost and specify the best materials to use

  • Set out the techniques that best helped us create a home that now stays warmer in winter & cooler in summer

We thermally upgraded all the walls by:

  • Applying a levelling skim coat layer of sand & cement render to the repaired existing brickwork. This improved airtightness and created a flat and even surface for the final insulation system.

  • Installing 60mm external wall insulation with a vented lightweight render system.

With good-quality workmanship and acute attention to detail, we achieved a successful domestic retrofit of our external walls. We ensured a secure and protected installation by sealing and treating joints & junctions as required.

By getting this right, we achieved:

  • Reduced HEAT LOSS

  • Minimised thermal bridging

  • Improved airtightness

  • Enhanced internal comfort

  • Full compliance with statutory requirements
