Improving our home, one step at a time, starting with the front door
When we replaced our front door in Autumn 2022, we had no idea it would be the first step in a much bigger journey, a whole house retrofit to make our 1930s home warmer, drier and more energy efficient!
Like many older homes, ours was draughty and damp, with little insulation to keep the heat in. Instead of simply adding more heating, we took a different approach, starting with the basics and improving our home’s fabric first. This is known as the Fabric First Approach and it’s a game-changer for reducing energy use, cutting bills and making a home more comfortable.
Here, we’ll take you through:
-
What was wrong with our old front door
-
How we prepared for and installed a high-performance replacement
-
The difference it made to our home’s warmth and efficiency
Our process was to first:
-
Assess the existing construction and measure the structural opening.
-
Remove outdated door & frame and carry out essential repairs
-
Improve the existing opening & installation of the high-performance door.
If you're looking for practical ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency, starting with the front door could be the perfect first step!
